Headword: *diwso/meqa
Adler number: delta,1254
Translated headword: we will reject
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] we will push away and send afar.
Greek Original:
*diwso/meqa: a)pwso/meqa kai\ a)popemyo/meqa.
Note:
= Timaeus Platonic Lexicon 983b12. The headword is future middle indicative, first person plural, of diwqe/w (cf. delta 1226). Very similar entries in Synagoge delta329 and Photius delta690, except that in these lexica the second gloss lacks the prefix apo-, and in the Synagoge we find the aorist subjunctive forms in headword and glosses alike (diwsw/meqa, etc.) in place of the future indicative, which would have been homophonous in late Greek; cf. Hesychius omicron1587. Gaisford referred the headword to Xenophon, Cyropaedia 7.5.39, but that passage has the aorist subjunctive diwsw/meqa. The source seems rather to be Plato, Sophist 251A or Theaetetus 163C, as its appearance in Timaeus' Lexicon would suggest, but the variant readings in other lexica do cloud the issue somewhat.
