Headword: Χαλκίοικος
Adler number: chi,46
Translated headword: Bronze-House, of the Bronze House; Chalkioikos
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[An epithet of] Athena in Sparta. [The term arose] either because she has a bronze house; or because it is a solid one; or because exiles from Chalkis [Myth, Place] in Euboia founded it.
Notes:
From the scholia to Thucydides 1.128.2, where the headword occurs (and recurs at 1.134.1 & 4). See also e.g. Euripides, Helen 228 & 245; Aristophanes, Lysistrata 1299; Lycurgus 1.128, Polybius 4.22.8 and 4.35.2.
Pausanias 3.17.1-3 gives reasons for accepting the first of the three etymologies proffered here; he saw it himself, and reports that both the temple and the cult-image were of bronze.
