Headword: Χειροτονεῖν τὸ αἰδοῖον
Adler number: chi,260
Translated headword: to handle the genitals, to masturbate
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
That is, to shamefully arouse and ejaculate.
Greek Original:
Χειροτονεῖν τὸ αἰδοῖον: τουτέστιν αἰσχρῶς ἀνακινεῖν καὶ ἀποσπερματίζειν.
Notes:
The headword phrase occurs only in Artemidorus 1.78: he who sees himself handling his genitals in a dream will debauch a male or female slave.
The verb in the phrase (chi 264) is more usually encountered in the context of raising the hand to vote (see chi 261, chi 262, and cf. chi 263), but here means, more simply, to span with the hand. In the mss of Artemidorus the verb has been transmitted as χειροκοπεῖν , but the Suda's version has rightly been preferred.
