Headword: Χαρτοφυλάκιον
Adler number: chi,143
Translated headword: document-case
Vetting Status: high
The [nouns formed] from the [verb] φυλάσσω ["I guard, keep safe"] are all written with an iota and are proparoxytone;[1] such as document-case, warehouse [σκευοφυλάκιον ] and [words] like these -- except for σιτοφυλακεῖον ["granary"] and νομοφυλακεῖον ["law-guardians' office"].[2]
Greek Original:
Χαρτοφυλάκιον: τὰ παρὰ τὸ φυλάσσω ἅπαντα διὰ τοῦ ι γράφεται καὶ προπαροξύνεται: οἷον χαρτοφυλάκιον, σκευοφυλάκιον καὶ τὰ τούτοις ὅμοια: πλὴν τοῦ σιτοφυλακεῖον καὶ νομοφυλακεῖον.
[1] These nouns are formed by analogy with neuter substantive uses of adjectives in -ιος . Hence, χαρτοπυλάκιον is a combination of *φυλάκιος ("guarding") and χάρτης , "papyrus", whence Latin charta and English charter. For more on σκευοφυλάκιον see sigma 564.
[2] These words are formed in -ειον rather than -ιον and are properispomenon (have a circumflex accent on the penult) rather than proparoxytone (with an acute accent on the antepenult). On σιτοφυλακεῖον see sigma 505. On νομοφυλακεῖον see nu 488 and chi 140.
