Headword: Χάριεν
Adler number: chi,103
Translated headword: pleasant
Vetting Status: high
Attic [speakers] send [the accent] two [syllables] back; the common [dialect puts it] before one [syllable].[1] Aristophanes in Wealth [writes]: "if there is anything bright and lovely or pleasant in the eyes of men, it comes about through you."[2]
Greek Original:
Χάριεν: οἱ Ἀττικοὶ πρὸ δύο ἀναπέμπουσι, τὸ δὲ πρὸ μιᾶς κοινόν. Ἀριστοφάνης Πλούτῳ: εἴ τί γ' ἔνεστι λαμπρὸν καὶ καλὸν ἢ χάριεν ἀνθρώποισι, διὰ σὲ γίνεται.
[1] The proparoxytone headword is usually taken as an adverbial form of the adjective, to which the Suda itself attests (see chi 104). The Suda seems to be saying that the neuter adjective is also proparoxytone. See LSJ s.v. IV at web address 1 below. For πρὸ μιᾶς in reference to accentuation, see also nu 62, chi 619.
