Headword: *brou=xos
Adler number: beta,562
Translated headword: locust
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the caterpillar.
Greek Original:
*brou=xos. h( ka/mph.
Notes:
Longer entries along the same lines in ps.-Zonaras s.v. and earlier in Hesychius s.v. -- the latter noting that the headword can also be spelled brou=kos in Ionic and brou=ka in Cypriot. (An earlier entry, besides, has registered Cretan breu=kos.) But the Suda's brou=xos is the form standard in the Septuagint. Adler classifies the entry as one deriving from glosses on the Psalms, in this instance Psalm 104.34, and see also e.g. Joel 1.4.
The gloss is lacking in mss F and V (so Adler). Etymologicum Magnum and Etymologicum Symeonis gloss with ei)=dos a)kri/dos "a kind of locust." Unglossed ka/mph appears at kappa 291.
