Ps.-Zonaras glosses the word as h( e)pi/tomos kai\ su/ntomos grafh/. brebi/w ga\r kata\ *lati/nous to\ te/mnw "an abridged and concise writing, for brevio according to the Latins [means] I cut." In fact there is a Latin verb brevio "shorten," from the adjective brevis "short."
