Headword: *bow/ths
Adler number: beta,387
Translated headword: ox-buyer
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The greatest offices amongst [the] Athenians used to be elected from these.
Greek Original:
*bow/ths: ai( me/gistai a)rxai\ para\ *)aqhnai/ois a)po\ tou/twn e)xeirotonou=nto.
Notes:
From Harpokration s.v.
The transmitted headword bow/ths is a textually corrupt version -- contaminated, presumably, by beta 386 -- of bow/nhs, "ox-buyer", for which see already beta 384.
It is not clear whether "from these" should read "to these" (cf. e)pi\ tou/tw| in Harpokration s.v.). At beta 384 ox-buyers are mentioned in connection with the strategia -- one of Athens' "greatest offices" -- but the ambiguity of the Greek there likewise makes it unclear whether generals tended to become ox-buyers or vice versa.
