Headword: *bow=men
Adler number: beta,383
Translated headword: let us call out to, let us proclaim, let us declare
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Used] with a dative.[1] [Meaning] let us swear.[2]
Also [sc. attested is the related participle] bow/menon ["being called-upon"], [meaning] being invoked.[3]
Greek Original:
*bow=men: dotikh=|. o)mo/swmen. kai\ *bow/menon, e)pikalou/menon.
Notes:
[1] (Likewise in syntactical lexica.) In classical usage, both boa/w ["I call upon"] and o)/mnumi ["I swear by"] were construed with the accusative, not the dative, but both can occur with dative in later Greek.
[2] The verb boa/w is sometimes used of solemn or inspired proclamations and declarations; perhaps it is in this sense that it could be glossed with "swear." Same glossing in Hesychius and Photius, though the headword there is transmitted as bww=men (otherwise unattested), not the Suda's bow=men.
[3] Present middle-passive participle of boa/w, masculine accusative singular or neuter nominative/accusative singular. Same glossing in Photius and elsewhere; evidently quoted from somewhere.
