Headword: *bhqani/a
Adler number: beta,252
Translated headword: Bethany
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A city of Palestine; but [1] what John the evangelist says, "these events took place in Bethany," is written erroneously. For Bethany is on the near side of the Jordan; but Bethabara, "where John was baptizing," is "beyond the Jordan." So it should rightly be written thus: "these events took place in Bethabara," but not in Bethany.

Note:
[1] cf. Theophylact of Ochrid (PG 123, 1172a-b) on John 1.28: "This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing." The issue is discussed by Origen in his Commentaries on the Gospel of John 6.40.
