Translated headword: Batalos, Batalus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
So Demosthenes was called while he was young, for being effeminate; but when older [he was called] Argas, from a snake of that name.
Greek Original:
*ba/talos: ou(/tws e)klh/qh o( *dhmosqe/nhs ne/os w)\n, w(s gunaikw/dhs: ghra/sas de\ a)rga\s, a)po\ o)/fews ou(/tw kaloume/nou.
Notes:
Similarly in other lexica. From the scholia to Demosthenes 18.180 (web address 1). The nickname is also referred to at Aeschines 2.99 (web address 2). While there is some evidence that 'Bat(t)alos' means 'stammerer', the present passage (and indeed Aeschines 2.99 itself) seems to demand obscene connotations as well or instead; cf. beta 177. Harpokration, under this entry, cites the comic poet Eupolis for 'batalos' as 'anus'.
For "Argas" see under alpha 3760, and for further reference to Demosthenes' nicknames see delta 454.
