Headword: *bargadw/q
Adler number: beta,111
Translated headword: Bargadoth
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A son of grief/pain.
Greek Original:
*bargadw/q: ui(o\s lu/phs.
Note:
Same entry, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon. In ps.-Zonaras the headword (whether name or epithet) is Bargathomos, with this same gloss and the extra information 'in Hebrew'. (Otherwise unattested.) From that gloss it would certainly appear that the element 'bar-' represents the Hebrew/Aramaic בר bar "son", but that leaves unclear the interpretation of the rest of the word. If '-gadoth', perhaps related to the root גדד gdd "to cut"?
