Headword: Αἰτώλιος
Adler number: alphaiota,380
Translated headword: Aitolian, Aetolian; owl
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[no gloss]
Greek Original:
Αἰτώλιος.
Note:
Without a gloss the import of this entry is unclear. It is most probably, in upper case, 'Aitolian/Aetolian', a rare variant of alphaiota 381 which occurs (applied to Diomedes [Author, Myth]) in Homer, Iliad 4.399; but lower-case αἰτώλιος is a falsa lectio for αἰγώλιος (a species of owl) in one of its appearances in Aristotle's History of Animals (563a31).
Keywords: dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic; geography; zoology
