Adler number: alphaiota,359
Translated headword: the citizen's error (is) the city's disgrace
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[no gloss]
Greek Original:
Αἰσχύνη πόλεως πολίτου ἁμαρτία.
Notes:
Adler draws attention to Aeschines 3.241, where Demosthenes is described as 'a fellow who is a disgrace of the city'. The present four-word lemma as a whole appears as proverbial in the C15 paroemiographer Michael Apostolius (1.70); note also the scholia to Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus 929: the phrase σὺ δ' ἀξίαν οὐκ οὖσαν αἰσχύνεις πόλιν there prompts the comment αἰσχύνη δὲ πατρίδος πολίτου ἁμαρτία ; and see generally Tosi [cited under alpha 378] no.258.
For disgrace cf. generally alphaiota 358, alphaiota 360, alphaiota 361, alphaiota 362.
