Headword: Αἰσύφηλος
Adler number: alphaiota,345
Translated headword: aisuphelos
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] one who is cowardly.
Greek Original:
Αἰσύφηλος: ὁ δειλός.
Note:
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras and, according to Adler, the Ambrosian Lexicon. Otherwise unattested in this form (and Adler notes no ms variants), but Hesychius has αἰσύφιος , glossed as δεινός, ψευδής, ἀπατεών ; see also Theognostus, Canones 16.6. In fact, as Dr. Nick Nicholas suggests to us, it may be a variant of, or mistake for, the epic word ἀσύφηλος : see alpha 4292.
