Headword: *)akalanqi/s
Adler number: alpha,785
Translated headword: Akalanthis, akalanthis
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A kind of bird, or the dog, perhaps [sc. named] from flattering [aikallein] the notables but barking at the strangers.
Greek Original:
*)akalanqi/s: ei)=dos o)rne/ou h)\ o( ku/wn, para\ to\ ai)ka/llein i)/sws tou\s gnwri/mous, u(laktei=n de\ tou\s ce/nous.
Note:
The rare headword occurs in Aristophanes: lower-case in Peace 1078; upper-case -- as an epithet of Artemis -- in Birds 871 and 872. These etymologies are from the scholia thereto. A connection with dogs is unconvincing; on the other hand the bird may or may not be the "goldfinch" that LSJ and others have supposed it. See Dunbar (below) 511.
