Headword: *)ah/ths
Adler number: alpha,664
Translated headword: gale
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the wind.[1]
And just as h(gh/sw ["I will lead"] [is cognate with the noun] h(ghth/s ["leader"]; [and] poih/sw ["I will create"] [with] poihth/s ["creator"]; so it was necessary [to postulate the sequence] a)/w ["I blow"], a)h/sw ["I will blow"], a)hth/s ["blower"]. But this is wrong.[2]
"When at night on the Carpathian sea with a gale encircling".[3]
Greek Original:
*)ah/ths: o( a)/nemos. kai\ w(/sper h(gh/sw, h(ghth/s: poih/sw, poihth/s: ou(/tws e)/dei a)/w, a)h/sw, a)hth/s. a)ll' h(ma/rthtai. *karpaqi/hn o(/te nukto\s a(/la stre/yantos a)h/tou.
Notes:
The headword is epic/poetic: see LSJ s.v. at web address 1 below.
[1] Same glossing in Hesychius (alpha1520), and cf. the scholia to Homer, Odyssey 9.139, where the plural occurs.
[2] The equivalent entry, post-Suda, in the Etymologicum Magnum (23.29-31) makes no such remark. Presumably what the Suda means is that a/w) is attested only in the imperfect a)/en: see LSJ s.v. a)/w (A) at web address 2 below. The verb is usually athematic: a)/hmi.
[3] Greek Anthology 6.245.1 (Diodorus), where the participle is ste/yantos, not the stre/yantos given here. "Carpathian" relates to the Aegean island of Carpathos, between Rhodes and Crete (Karpathos, Barrington Atlas map 60 grid E4). The epigram, the sailor Diogenes's dedication of a promised object to one of the Kabeiroi (cf. kappa 6) during a storm at sea, is attributed to Diodorus; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 234-235; and vol. II, 267-268) and further extracts from this epigram at alpha 1108, beta 390, lambda 183, and lambda 733.
