Adler number: alpha,589
Translated headword: gloomy
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] that which is black/dark.
Greek Original:
*)azhlo/en: to\ me/lan.
Notes:
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras and, according to Adler, the Ambrosian Lexicon.
This adjective, here neuter nominative/accusative singular, is otherwise unattested and its etymology is unclear. It could be related to a)/zhlos "unenviable, dreary" (alpha 590), but the suffix seems arbitrary. (It should not be an Ionic form of the adjective a)zale/os [alpha 579, alpha 580], which has a short alpha.)
