A Boeotian name for the bird merops (bee-eater, Merops apiaster): see the two LSJ entries at web address 1 and web address 2. Mentioned in a scholion on Aristophanes, Birds 1354.
Hesychius glosses Aeropes as an ethnic name from Troezen (tau 1099) and Macedonia, as well as the name of a bird. Chantraine s.v. associates it with a series of avian and ethnic names with the ending -ops, which he regards as Macedonian.
