[1] The story, in Herodotus 3.69.3-4, of Phaidima feeling to determine whether the sleeping Smerdis had ears includes two forms of the headword verb ἀφάσσω (aorist imperative ἄφασον , feminine present participle ἀφάσσουσα ): web address 1 below. The Suda's masculine participle ἀφάσσων , however, is quoted from somewhere else: either Apollonius Rhodius, Argonautica 4.428, or Lycophron, Alexandra 114; the scholia to both passages gloss it as here.
