Notes:
[1] Its best-known bearer is the father of the Athenian orator Aeschines: see alphaiota 347, alphaiota 348.
[2] Greek Anthology 6.256.1-5 (Zonas or Antipater); cf. alpha 4368, sigma 376, tau 316. On this epigram, a tribute to Nicophon, a champion Milesian boxer, see Gow and Page vol. I (80-81) and vol. II (106-107). On the basis of his ethnic, Gow and Page identify (ibid.) the pugilist as Nicophon of Miletus, who was an umpire of games 11-12 CE. In Codex A of the Anthologia Planudea (APL) this epigram is credited to Zonas (cf. Gow and Page, vol. I (81)), whereas in Codex B of the APL, the attribution is to Antipater instead. Gow and Page suggest that the APL copyist in Codex A incorrectly transposed Zonas's name, because in the Anthologia Palatina Zonas's Greek Anthology 6.106 had been repeated after Greek Anthology 6.255; they prefer to ascribe this epigram to Antipater of Thessalonica; cf. vol. II (106).
[3] George of Pisidia fr. 64 (which despite what is transmitted here needs a)tromh/tws, not a)tro/mws).
