Notes:
[1] This quotation (not identified by Adler) recurs at pi 262. OCD(4) s.v. proffers several Republican Roman Papirii, but Favuzzi [see under alpha 1518] 47-49 makes a good case for regarding this one as the boy Papirius, from an anecdote of Cato's preserved in Aulus Gellius (Attic Nights 1.23); he precociously attends meetings of the Senate but refuses to tell his mother what he heard there, and earns the cognomen Praetextatus accordingly. (This is the subject of an oil painting by the Neoclassical artist Angelica Kauffman [1741-1807]: Papirius Praetextatus Entreated by his Mother to Disclose the Secrets of the Roman Senate.) Favuzzi further suggests that this passage be attributed to Aelian; cf. sigma 1023.
