Headword: Ἀπρόσιτος
Adler number: alpha,3698
Translated headword: inaccessible
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] unapproachable.[1]
"[Something] 'inaccessible' differs from [something] 'incomprehensible' [or, 'uncontainable']: for 'incomprehensible' is when that which is investigated or sought is not apprehended by those who seek it. But 'inaccessible' is that which does not admit of investigation at all. For a sea or an abyss can be 'uncontainable,' but something 'inaccessible' is not able to be investigated at all, such as the question of the essence of God."[2]
Notes:
[1] Same or similar glossing (of this masculine nominative singular) in other lexica. Latte on Hesychius s.v. claims it as generated by neuter ἀπρόσιτον in the New Testament (I Timothy 6.16). This entry is cross-referenced at alpha 810.
