Headword: *)aposa/canta
Adler number: alpha,3515
Translated headword: having caulked, having sealed off
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Dinarchus [uses this] to mean [him] having blocked the hole.
Greek Original:
*)aposa/canta: *dei/narxos a)nti\ tou= fra/canta to\ trh=ma.
Notes:
Abridged from Harpokration s.v., citing Dinarchus fr. 13 Conomis. The headword is aorist participle, masculine accusative singular (or, less probably, neuter plural), of a)posa/ttw.
In later Greek the prefix a)po-, used before the verb for 'pack full, stuff', alters the meaning to the opposite, 'unpack, offload (from a camel)'; so e.g. Genesis 24.32 LXX; Anna Comnena, Alexias 15.6.4.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; rhetoric; science and technology
