Headword: *)apollw/nion
Adler number: alpha,3418
Translated headword: ApollĂ´nion
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
An abbreviated way of saying 'the shrine of Apollo'. This is also the correct reading in Thucydides.[1] Likewise PoseidĂ´nion, the [shrine] of Poseidon. Thus Athenaion, that of Athena, and Dionysion and Demetrion, and all such things, homonymous with the anthroponyms.[2] But as for Poseidaneion,[3] it is clearly a Doric form.
Greek Original:

Notes:
This material (also in the Synagoge, alpha1886) appears again, re-arranged, at alpha 730, delta 428, delta 1169 (end), and pi 2103.
[1] Thucydides 2.91.1 (web address 1). The alternative spelling *)apollw/neion with a diphthong is attested in Cassius Dio and discussed by Ps.-Herodian, Stephanus of Byzantium, and (post-Suda) Eusthathius of Thessalonica.
[2] That is, like the proper names Dionysios, Demetrios, Poseidonios, etc.
[3] Unattested outside lexicography. But the god's name is attested with an alpha, *posei/dan in Aeolic, *poseida/n in Doric poetry.
