Headword: *)apemorca/mhn
Adler number: alpha,3019
Translated headword: I brushed away (tears)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I wiped away [tears], I cried. "So that I felt pity, and I brushed away tears, seeing an elderly man panic-striken by an archer-fellow."[1] For it follows by logic that he brushed away tears.
Or a)pemo/rcato ["he/she/it brushed away"], [meaning he/she/it] adapted.
"He had just brushed rain from his hair, but on his track had come an ox-eating lion into the hollow path."[2]
Also a)pemo/rcato [in the sense of he/she/it] cast off, smeared off.[3]

[1] Aristophanes, Acharnians 706-707 (web address 1 below), with comment from the scholia there. Again at omega 243. Such "archers" enforced law and order in Athens.
[2] Greek Anthology 6.217.3-4, attributed to Simonides; again at beta 473. The preceding verses are quoted at kappa 1050. On this epigram, in which a Gallus scares away a lion by beating his timbrel, see Gow and Page vol. I (180); vol. II (517-518); and further extracts at epsilon 1196, eta 482, lambda 147, and omicron 541. Although u(eto/s (here in the accusative singular) is indeed "rain", prior lines in the epigram (cf. kappa 105) reveal that the Gallus has taken shelter from a snowstorm. It is thus likely that he is brushing snow--or, as Gow and Page suggest (vol. II, 518), melted snow--from his hair. The Galli (cf. gamma 41, gamma 42) were eunuch priests of Kybele (kappa 2586).
[3] Whether this relates to the passages just quoted or to another one is unclear.
