Adler number: alpha,2961
Translated headword: carry away
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[a)/paire is] that which many say as a)=ron.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] a)pai/rein, meaning to attend/be present. Aristophanes [sc. uses the word].[2] Also [sc. attested is the participle] a)pai/rontes, [meaning they] removing themselves.[3]
Greek Original:
*)/apaire: o(\ oi( polloi\ a)=ron le/gousin. kai\ *)apai/rein, a)nti\ tou= paragene/sqai. *)aristofa/nhs. kai\ *)apai/rontes, meqista/menoi.
Notes:
Same material, variously, in other lexica.
[1] i.e. (uncompound) aorist, as well as (compound) present imperative.
[2] Probably Aristophanes, Ecclesiazusae 818, a)ph=ra "I went away", though the gloss seems a poor fit, and Adler attaches a question-mark. (Theodoridis on Photius s.v. prefers to call it a new fragment.)
[3] If this too comes from Aristophanes, it is his fr. 717 Kock, now 944 K.-A. But perhaps from elsewhere, e.g. Thucydides 4.26.6.
