Headword: Ἀωρίαι
Adler number: alpha,2854
Translated headword: late, out-of-season
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning inopportunely and not at the required moment. For ἄωρα are [crops] being harvested at the wrong time. Aristophanes [writes]: "the prytaneis are coming, but late."[1]
"For it is not permitted for Babylonians to walk over a grave late."[2]
It also means darkness.
And Aelian [writes]: "since it was late, he was eager for the murder."[3]
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] "late of nights".[4]
Notes:
Adler prints the headword as ἀωρίαι ; it should perhaps be ἀωρίᾳ , as in the first two quotations below (but see next note). Cf. epsilon 1117.
[1] Aristophanes, Acharnians 23 (where however ἀωρίαν rather than the Suda's ἀωρίᾳ is the preferred reading: web address 1), with scholion.

[4] With the related adverb ἀωρί : three times in the First Tetralogy of Antiphon (2.1.4, 2.2.5, 2.4.5).
