[2] Procopius, History of the Wars of Justinian 7.16.18 (web address 1); the Gothic king Totila (cf. tau 879) rebukes Pelagius (a deacon in Rome at the time (probably late 546 CE); cf. alpha 1585 note), when the latter appeals for a pause in the Goths' siege of the city; cf. Kaldellis (412). Totila reminds Pelagius that, complying with a Roman request not to burden the local population, the Goths had left Sicily lightly garrisoned, only to later have the Byzantines rapidly overwhelm the island (in 535; cf. Bury (170-171)) with a superior invading force. On the embassy of Pelagius to Totila, see also alpha 1585 and alpha 2155.
