Notes:
Abridged from Harpokration s.v., an entry generated by the mention of A. in Isaeus fr. 83 Sauppe: "and the bath-house next to the statue of Anthemocritus".
For this episode see principally Plutarch, Perikles 30. Following the lead of the ancient sources, most modern scholars date it to the 430s BCE, in the prelude to the Peloponnesian War. An alternative view holds is that it has been wrongly transferred to that context from the 350s (when once again the "sacred meadow" was in dispute between Athens and her western neighbour Megara). Ste.Croix and Stadter, below, review the arguments.
For the "sacred meadow" (hiera orgas) cf. omicron 504, omicron 505.
