Headword: *)ana/rpastoi
Adler number: alpha,2054
Translated headword: non-initiates
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the uninitiated, for whom there have been no rites or orgies.
Greek Original:
*)ana/rpastoi: oi( a)mu/htoi, oi(=s teletai\ kai\ o)/rgia ou)k e)ge/nonto.
Note:
The transmitted headword a)na/rpastoi, a nominative plural, does occur (in e.g. Theophrastus, De pietate fr. 3) but is nevertheless incorrect here. It should be a)norgi/astoi, which Timaeus' Platonic Lexicon gives as the headword to the present gloss; and that in turn is presumably generated by the accusative plural in [Plato], Epinomis 985D.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; philosophy; religion
