The quotation concerns an early moment in the rebellion that took place (late 237-early 238 CE) in the Roman province of Africa (Barrington Atlas map 101 grids G5-J5). The procurator of Carthage and its environs had subjected wealthy and aristocratic young men to severe fines and confiscations of their assets. Anticipating the loss of their inheritances, the grievants utilized the negotiated delay in payments to foment a rebellion; cf. alpha 2900 and John of Antioch Fragmenta ex Historia chronica fr. 224 Roberto (396-397).
