Translated headword: verily, amen
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] assuredly, truly.
Greek Original:
*)amh/n: pepistwme/nws, a)lhqw=s.
Notes:
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras and, according to Adler, similar one (the second synonym only) in the Ambrosian Lexicon.
In Hebrew, אמן ʾāmēn is not an adverb but an exclamation, given as a response. Both the Septuagint and the New Testament use it in this way, as "so be it, amen." The second NT sense of "truly, verily," as in "verily I say to you," neither corresponds to Hebrew usage nor appears in the LXX. See LSJ entry at web address 1; and cf. eta 320.
