Headword: Ἀμαυρά
Adler number: alpha,1511
Translated headword: faint [things]
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] dark [ones]. Whence also 'faint',[1] [meaning] that which is not conspicuous.[2]
And Arrian [writes]: "for these reasons even for the future I have no faint a hope that [things] will go well for me."[3]
Greek Original:
Ἀμαυρά: σκοτεινά. ὅθεν καὶ ἀμαυρόν, τὸ μὴ διαφανές. καὶ Ἀρριανός: ἐξ ὧν καὶ τὰ ὑπόλοιπα δι' ἐλπίδος ἔχω οὐκ ἀμαυρᾶς, ὅτι καλῶς μοι ἕξει.
Notes:
[1] i.e. the neuter singular of the headword.
[2] Likewise or similarly in other lexica; references at Photius alpha1145 Theodoridis. Latte on Hesychius s.v. ἀμαυρόν regards ἀμαυρά as extracted from the Septuagint (Leviticus 13.4), but there are numerous other possibilities.
[3] Arrian, Parthica p.77 Roos (FGrH 156 F118). In this common Greek idiom, 'no(t) faint' means strong.
