Adler number: alpha,1500
Translated headword: witness-less
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning unattested.[1] Thus Antiphanes [sc. uses the word].[2]
Greek Original:
*)amarturh/tous: a)nti\ tou= a)martu/rous. ou(/tws *)antifa/nhs.
Notes:
[1] Adjectives in the accusative plural here, but NB (homophonous) adverbs in Photius, Lexicon alpha1136 Theodoridis. Either way, a finer distinction in the Greek than it can readily be made to sound in translation.
[2] Antiphanes fr. 311 Kock, now 326 K.-A. Photius s.v. gives the authority as 'Antiphon', but that, even if preferable, leaves doubt between the orator (fr. 144a Thalheim, preferred by Theodoridis) and the sophist (fr. 93b DK).
