Headword: Ἀλφούς
Adler number: alpha,1457
Translated headword: dull-whites, off-whites
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. Masculine] white or [sc. feminine] white [ones].
Greek Original:
Ἀλφούς: λευκοὺς ἢ λευκάς.
Notes:
Same or similar entry in other lexica; references at Photius alpha1077 Theodoridis. The headword is accusative plural of the noun ἀλφός , defined by LSJ as "dull-white leprosy, esp. on the face". (It is cognate with Latin albus; cf. the compounds ἀλφοπρόσωπος "white-faced" and ἀλφόρυγχος "white-snouted".)
This accusative plural must be quoted from somewhere -- probably Plato, Timaeus 85A, λεύκας ἀλφούς . The glossing aims to point out that, since ἀλφός is masculine, one could just as well write λευκούς .
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; medicine; philosophy
