Headword: Ἁλωτόν
Adler number: alpha,1404
Translated headword: attainable, capturable
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] that which is capable of being taken.
"Everything that is sought is attainable; but that which is overlooked escapes."[1]
Also [sc. attested is] ἁλωτοί , [meaning those who are] apprehendable, able to be subdued.[2]
And Euripides [writes]: "may I never be caught doing bad things."[3]
Greek Original:
Ἁλωτόν: τὸ ληφθῆναι δυνάμενον. πᾶν τὸ ζητούμενον, ἁλωτόν: ἐκφεύγει δὲ τἀμελούμενον. καὶ Ἁλωτοί: ληπτοί, χειρωτοί. καὶ Εὐριπίδης: οὐ μή ποθ' ἁλῶ κακὰ πράσσων.
Notes:
The neuter singular headword is presumably extracted from the first quotation given.
[1] Sophocles, Oedipus Tyrannus 110-111 (which does not have "everything").
[2] This nominative plural has the same glossing in other lexica. It is evidently quoted from somewhere -- probably Thucydides 6.77.2 (a phrase quoted by Dionysius of Halicarnassus in his study of that writer).
[3] Euripides fr. 918 Nauck; cf. pi 40.
