Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Name of a city.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] 'Alipheireus', name of a river.[2]
Greek Original:
*)ali/feira: o)/noma po/lews. kai\ *)alifeireu/s, o)/noma potamou=.
Notes:
[1] Alipheira was a city in the western Peloponnese; its site was, specifically, 9-10 km. south of the city of Heraea (Heraia) in western Arcadia (Barrington Atlas map 58 grid B2; see e.g. Polybius 4.77-78, web address 1). Together with several other cities in the region (cf. Pausanias 8.27.4, web address 2), Alipheira belonged to the Kynourian tribal state (T.H. Nielsen in Hansen & Nielsen 509-510 #266; cf. Walbank 531). A more prominent Kynourian district lay on the eastern coast of the Peloponnesus (Barrington Atlas map 58 grid D3; modern-day North and South Kynouria, Arcadia, Greece), in the often-contested region (cf. Pausanias 3.2.2-3, web address 3) between the Argolid (the region surrounding Argos [Myth, Place], cf. alpha 3766) to the north and Lakedaimonia (the region around Sparta, cf. lambda 49) to the south.
[2] One would have expected the lexicographer to define 'Alipheireus' as the demotikon of a citizen of Alipheira -- which would indeed have been true. The river which (according to this entry) bore a name cognate with it was more commonly called the Alpheus (for which see alpha 1448, alpha 1449).
