*)/allika
Adler number: alpha,1224
Translated headword: allix, mantle
Vetting Status: high
Translation: A chlamys according to Thessalians:[1] "an allix fastened with gilt brooches."[2]
The locals(?)[3] call this gallix.[4]
Greek Original:*)/allika: xlamu/da kata\ *qessalou/s: a)/llika xrusei/h|sin e)ergome/nhn e)ne/th|sin. oi( i)diw=tai ga/llika/ fasi tau/thn.
Notes:
[1] Accusative singular of
a)/llic; similarly glossed in
Hesychius and other lexica (where entries are also found for the nominative). For chlamys see
chi 333.
[2]
Callimachus,
Hecale fr. 253; quoted again at
epsilon 1268.
[3] The sense of
i)diw=tai (
iota 121) intended here, and apparently paralleled at
pi 3125, is uncertain. For the (Aristophanic) sense translated here see LSJ s.v. IV, but other possibilities are laymen and ignoramuses.
[4] Although the etymology is unknown, it seems likely that gamma was written here for digamma, which was pronounced in Aeolic dialects later than in other Greek dialects. Thus the word would have been
wallix.
