Headword: *)agaqo/s
Adler number: alpha,120
Translated headword: good
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
From a)/ghmi, a)/gamai, [come] a)gasto/s [and] a)gaqo/s.
Greek Original:
*)agaqo/s: para\ to\ a)/ghmi, a)/gamai, a)gasto\s kai\ a)gaqo/s.
Notes:
For the headword see also alpha 121 (likewise masculine), alpha 118, alpha 119 (neuter).
The present entry seems to assert an etymological connection between a)gaqo/s ('good') and these other words. The others are apparently interrelated: a)/ghmi seems to be an active version of the attested a)/gamai ('wonder at, admire'), and a)gasto/s means 'admired'. All are connected with the prefix a)ga-. The derivation of a)gaqo/s from the same prefix is not accepted nowadays, but scholars do not agree on any other derivation either.
