Headword: Hadrêsis
Adler number: alpha,534
Translated headword: maturity
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] ripeness, inaction.
Greek Original:
Hadrêsis: hê hadroasis, hê apraxia.
Notes:
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras; and Adler reports a comparable one in the Ambrosian Lexicon (452). Otherwise, the sole occurrence of the headword is in one of Basil of Caesarea's Homilies on the Hexaemeron (6.8: accusative case).
This abstract noun derives from the adjective a(dro/s (alpha 533): see Lampe s.v. [Not in LSJ] However, the second gloss here implicitly derives it from a)- (sic: with smooth breathing) and dra/w. In philosophical contexts a)praci/a refers to the argument that the skeptic -- insofar as he will never accept a criterion and will never be able to decide what to do -- makes life impossible by leading the agent towards inactivity. See Plutarch, Against Colotes 1108D, 1122A; Sextus Empiricus, Outlines of Pyrrhonism 1.23-24.
