Headword: Adeimantos
Adler number: alpha,453
Translated headword: Adeimantos, Adimantus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A general of the Corinthians, who called Themistocles a city-less man. But he said "Who [is] city-less, when he has 200 triremes?".[1]
Plato, too, mentions this man in the Protagoras.[2] For he was one of those serving as general in those times. Mocked for their wickedness were Kleon,[3] Myrmex[4] and Nikomachos[5] and Archemoros[6] along with Adeimantos the son of Leukolophos.[7]
Greek Original:

Notes:
[1] From an intermediate source -- also used, in Adler's opinion (whose addenda cites FGrH 104 for comparison), at alpha 1280 and elsewhere -- going back ultimately to Herodotus 8.61 (web address 1 below), on the prelude to the battle of Salamis (480 BCE).
[2] Plato, Protagoras 315E (web address 2 below). This mentions two men called Adeimantos, both of them Athenians of the late C5 BCE (and so neither of them the Corinthian general from Herodotus): A. the son of Kepis and A. the son of Leukolophides. The latter, much the better-attested of the two (R. Develin, Athenian Officials 684-321 BC (Cambridge 1989) no.31), was an elected Athenian general in 407, 406 and 405; and it is he who is referred to in the remainder of the present entry, which draws on the scholia to Aristophanes, Frogs 1504-1513 (web address 3 for the text of Aristophanes).
[3] An error for Kleophon (Develin no.1672).
[4] Not otherwise known. (Perhaps anyway a nickname; cf. mu 1445.)
[5] Develin no.2140.
[6] cf. alpha 4085 -- but in fact another error: for Archenomos (otherwise unknown).
[7] (See above, n.2; the Suda takes over this foreshortened version of his patronymic from Aristophanes.) The name Adeimantos is particularly suited to comedy because it can be construed as General Dauntless; cf. alpha 452.
