Headword: Autê kaminos, autos heilkuse kapnos ê trochos
Adler number: alpha,4472
Translated headword: the oven itself, the smoke itself or the wheel dragged on
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. A proverbial saying] in reference to those doing the same or similar things.
Greek Original:
Autê kaminos, autos heilkuse kapnos ê trochos: epi tôn homoia kai paraplêsia diaprattomenôn.
Notes:
Baffling, as transmitted (and Adler indicates no textual problems.)
The first element does, of itself, constitute a proverbial saying: so Photius, explicitly, with a gloss very similar to the present one; also Hesychius, who has such a gloss plus the extra comment that 'the metaphor [comes] from the potter's wheel'. So the Suda's 'wheel' is presumably a potter's wheel, but even if so, the second element of the present headword phrase (unparalleled elsewhere) is opaque.
LSJ s.v. ka/minos (kappa 284) cites some proverbs involving ovens, but not this one.
Keywords: daily life; food; imagery; proverbs; trade and manufacture
