Notes:
[1] The name was applied in antiquity to restricted parts of Anatolia (modern Turkey), first to the Hermus and Cayster valleys, then to the kingdoms of Lydia and Persia (the latter first in Aeschylus, Persians 929?), then to the Roman province in western Anatolia, but, quite early also, to the easternmost of the three continents known to early geographers (with Europe and Libya). [2] Aristophanes, Thesmophoriazousae 120, in a chorus dealing with rhythm (web address 1). The Asias was an Asian, perhaps Lydian or Persian, stringed instrument.
