Headword: Agônian
Adler number: alpha,331
Translated headword: to contest
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Isocrates [sc. uses the word] to mean agonizesthai ["to compete"].
Greek Original:
Agônian: Isokratês anti tou agônizesthai.
Note:
Here in the Suda the glossed word is a)gwnia=n, the infinitive of the verb a)gwnia/w, which Isocrates uses in 4.91 (see alpha,334). The equivalent entry in the immediate source, Harpokration, glosses a)gwni/an, the accusative case of the noun a)gwni/a, and gives a precise reference in Isocrates: to On the Antidosis (i.e. 15.183 and 302). So while the Suda entry might make sense in its own terms, it distorts the explanatory point originally intended.
