Headword: Apeiraton
Adler number: alpha,3128
Translated headword: untried
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] untested.[1]
"It seemed best to him not to leave it untested whether Osroes would somehow change his mind and submit to those who were justly esteemed, both in Roman eyes and those of his own [people]."[2]
Greek Original:
Apeiraton: adokimaston. ouk apeiraton autôi edoxen eklipein, ei pê Osroês gnôsimachêsas apodusetai tois ek Rhômaiôn te kai heautou xun dikêi axioumenois.
Notes:
[1] The headword is perhaps extracted from the quotation given. (If so, it is neuter singular (rather than masculine accusative) of this adjective, an Attic form of a)pei/rhtos (cf. alpha 3133).) But there are many other extant possibilities, beginning with Pindar, Olympian Odes 11.18, where one of the scholia proffers the synonym a)do/kimon.
[2] Arrian, Parthika fr.33 Roos-Wirth (= FGrH 156 F126); again at gamma 356 (with u(podu/setai, apparently correctly, for the present a)podu/setai).
