Headword: Apespase
Adler number: alpha,3064
Translated headword: dragged off
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] took away by force.[1]
"The Spartiates sat as suppliants of the god at Tainaron and begged for salvation. But they mercilessly dragged them off and, indeed, killed them."[2]
Greek Original:
Apespase: meta bias exeileto. hoi de Spartiatai ekathênto tou theou hiketai es Tainaron kai êitoun sôtêrian. hoi de apespasan apheidôs kai mala apekteinan autous.
Notes:
The third-person singular headword is evidently extracted from somewhere (other than the quotation given, which has the third-person plural); there are numerous possibilities.
[1] cf. alpha 3544.
[2] Perhaps Aelian, according to Adler. In any event the episode in question is the one also mentioned by Thucydides 1.128 (see tau 206). In this version of it, as noted long ago by Thomas Reinesius (1587-1667), the word "Spartiates" is a mistake for "Helots".
