Headword: Anôgeôn
Adler number: alpha,2582
Translated headword: upstairs, upper storey
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning a] dwelling-place.
But [sc. note also the spelling] a)nw/geion.
Callisthenes said that a)nw/gewn is the prison.[1]
*)ana/gaion ["upstairs"] and kata/gaion ["downstairs"] [are spelled] with a diphthong and omicron.[2] The standard is perhaps to write a)nw/gewn and katw/gewn with omega and a plain [epsilon], but then the hunter of words[3] and the precise orthographer of the corresponding letters Kapnogeneios the Maistor[4] taught that these words should be written with the epsilon and the omicron. Only the word meso/gaion ["interior"] permits the diphthong, since it is derived from mesogei/a gh= and meso/geios gh=.
