Homer [writes]: "not as many as
Lesbos, seat of blessed men, encloses."[1] And one must apply the augment to
e)e/rgei, so that it is restrains, tucks in; it tends to mean establishes boundaries.
Greek Original:Anô: anti tou ana. Homêros: oud' hosa Lesbos anô makarôn hedos entos eergei. kai tên prothesin kollêteon tôi eergei, hina êi aneirgei, anastellei: ho katastrephei eis to periorizei.
Note:
[1] A version of
Homer,
Iliad 24.544 (web address 1) followed by the comment of the
scholia there. The opening negative here is a simple error; beyond that, "seat of blessed men" should more probably be "seat of Makar" (a mythological king of
Lesbos: see in brief OCD(4) p.878); cf. "city of Makar" in
Strabo 8.3.31 and esp. 13.1.7, where this line is quoted.
