Headword: Amphisbêtein
Adler number: alpha,1764
Translated headword: to claim
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[To claim] and to counter-claim. Those involved in litigation [about] the estate[1] are said to claim or to counter-claim, with one side maintaining that the estate is [not][2] a matter for litigation, as there is a son of the deceased either by descent or by adoption, while the other side say that because the deceased died childless they have a better right to the estate, being either relatives or named as heirs in a will. That is how Demosthenes and Hyperides elucidated counter-claiming.[3]
Greek Original:

Notes:
See also alpha 1765. The present entry derives from Harpokration s.v.
[1] A genitive plural in Harpok. has become debased, here, to an accusative singular.
[2] The negative (supplied by Dobree), in Harpok. and again here, is needed for the statement to make sense.
[3] Demosthenes 43.5; Hyperides fr. 108 Jensen.
